To create a MIDI file on the keyboard, record a User Song, then use the "Save SMF" option in the File Control menu to convert the User Song to a MIDI file on a USB flash drive (or "thumb drive"). One advantage of this is that the MIDI file will already contain the instructions for selecting the desired voices, effects, and other settings. The keyboard has a function called "InitSend" which will transmit its current settings to the computer so they can be recorded.Īs an alternative, you might want to create a MIDI file on the keyboard itself, then transfer the resulting MIDI file to your computer so you can open it in your DAW for further editing. But one issue you might run into is how to record the selection of the voices and other settings. The actual process of recording MIDI will depend on your DAW, so I can't give general instructions for that. Make sure the keyboard is connected to the computer and turned on while you install the driver, so the driver will be able to detect the keyboard. However, if you're using a Windows computer and the keyboard doesn't show up in your DAW software, you might want to install the driver for it, which you can download from Yamaha's web site go to their "Support" page, then "Downloads," enter your keyboard model ("PSR-E453"), and select the correct version of the driver for your Windows version. so you shouldn't need to install a driver for it.
While the keyboard is turned off, plug the squarish end of the cable into the USB "TO HOST" port on the back of the keyboard, and plug the flattish end of the cable into a USB 2 port on your computer. You'll need a standard USB 2 cable, often called a "USB printer cable" because it's commonly used to connect a USB printer to a computer. However, recording the keyboard's MIDI output on your computer does give you more options, especially with regard to editing.
